He sat for updating and issuing fatwas in Baghdad, and people used to gather to study him until their number reached nearly five thousand.Ibn Hanbal was famous for his patience with the ordeal that befell him, which was known as “the fitnah of the creation of the Qur’an.” It was a fitnah that took place in the Abbasid era during the reign of the caliph al-Ma’mun, then al-Mu’tasim and al-Wathiq after him. Hanbal and other scholars disagreed with that, so Ibn Hanbal was imprisoned and tortured, then released from prison and returned to modernization and teaching.
